Sergei L'vovich Sobolev was a remarkable teacher. His brilliant and vivid lectures were attended by students of the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute, Leningrad, Moscow, and Novosibirsk State Universities. On the base of his profound lectures the textbook "Equations of Mathematical Physics" and two monographs "Some Applications of Functional Analysis in Mathematical Physics" and "Introduction into the Theory of Cubature Formulas" were compiled. His book "Some Applications of Functional Analysis in Mathematical Physics" which appeared in 1950 and was translated later into many languages, is a deskbook for all mathematicians working in the field of functional analysis and differential equations. It should be noted that in 1978, i.e., 28 years later, this book was reprinted in the USA.
The ideas by S.L.Sobolev, presented in that book, exerted substantial influence on the further development of the theory of generalized functions, embedding theory for function spaces and partial differential equations. These books by S.L.Sobolev keep their value for many years, exert and will exert for long time deep influence on mathematicians. It was not accidental that in the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s a whole series of revised
editions and translations of Sobolev's books was published.
The number of Sobolev's students and followers is enormous. The influence of Sobolev's ideas and methods is so large that many prominent scientists consider themselves as his students and followers though he did not teach them directly.
Sergei L'vovich guided many research seminars at the
Leningrad, Moscow, and Novosibirsk State Universities and at the Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Science.
